An Actual Store is Carrying My Book

Katie Matthews novel Cut and Bound
My novel on the shelf at Book Bar in Denver

Ohhhhh yeeea, an actual store is carrying my book! Dream come true! The BookBar of Denver accepted my book into their local author program and I could not be more grateful. So of course I had to get a picture of me grinning stupidly next to my book on the shelf.

So cheers to the self-published authors and the independent bookstores who support them!

That’s very hopeful! I’ve been struggle with the idea of self publishing lately. How did you know it was time to take that plunge and self publish?

I’ve always had an independent spirit, and the more I read about how much control the author has when self-publishing, the more I realized it was for me. Also, I am in marketing communications by day, so having to market my book and use social media for it didn’t scare me off. Plus I had heard from others how great Amazon CreateSpace was for self-publishing so that convinced me too. Have you published a book through traditional channels, and are now considering self-publishing?

I’m querying my first novel now and working on my second. Here in Detroit we have a ton of outlets for self published authors, the Ann Arbor book fair is very supportive of self published authors and Lake Orion public library has one too. I’m getting closer to considering it because it doesn’t seem as unattractive as it once did, and yes you and I are similar that we like to manage ourselves. How is selling online? Has that been successful for you? Like on Amazon?

Sales were fast at first, due to word of mouth of my family and friends and reach beyond that. They have slowed down now, but I also recognize that I haven’t been doing much marketing. My day job has me tied up right now. But getting it into this bookstore makes me hopeful and I want to try to get it into more now. I’m also finding that book groups are a great way to get exposure and sales. I’m attending a book group next month who read my book.
That’s great that you have good local places that support self-published authors – if you decide to go that way at least you know you have a starting point.

Yeah it’s good. It’s just that querying takes a lot of time and I have other books to write, you know? So sometimes I feel it’s a waste of time when I know the industry is so tough. But you should check out the Ann Arbor book fair, and see what comes of that, it’s huge here!
