The Dogma in Karma

Do you believe in karma? Do you believe that our actions will eventually come around full circle to either benefit us, or bite us in the butt? There was a news story last week of a road rage incident in which a woman started filming the guy who was tailgating her and flipping her off, and then when he roared away he lost control of his truck and got into an accident right in front of her. It was billed as karma in social media.

Karma is an interesting idea and I guess it could be either scary or inspiring, depending on the type of person that you are. Its origin is of the ancient religions of India. It also is very similar to the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, which appears in the Bible, Matthews 7:12. It’s a basic premise and a really good way to live your life I think.

Karma takes the idea one step further than the Golden Rule does though. Karma implies that you WILL experience the full circle of your actions. That if you did someone wrong, cheated or stole, etc., that eventually something bad (or maybe even worse than the original action) will happen to you. Or conversely that if you perform a good deed, or go out of your way to do something nice, that something nice will then happen to you, and you will notice that it happened. So it seems the religions that speak of karma believe that you will feel the karma come ’round, not just have the knowledge that you did something good or bad.

So what do you think? Is karma real? Have you experienced it? Or is it really just the Golden Rule with more scare tactics?
